With the Finance team, he supports Right Side Up and its clients with all accounting and finance needs. Blake always seeks to improve processes, telling it as it is and delivering results in an area of business that demands integrity. As such, Blake recently received the honor of Core Value Superstar for upholding Right Side Up’s Honesty value.

Q&A with Blake Lehmans

Blake, who started at Right Side Up in February 2023, joins us for this Talent Spotlight, a series profiling Right Side Up employees and growth marketing consultants within our talent network. It’s an opportunity to chat with experts and share who they are, their insights gathered over the years, and how they balance work and life.

Here’s our conversation with Blake—in which he discusses his role at Right Side Up and how he spends his time outside of work.

Where is home these days? What is your work environment like?

I call Charlotte, North Carolina, home. Living in 1,000 square feet with another remote worker, we have to take advantage of all the space we have! I’ve converted a small sunroom into my workspace, and if you ever jump on a video call with me, you’ll see my bikes hanging in the background. I also have a black cat who keeps me company all day. She’s never more than five feet from my side.

What’s your title, how would you describe your current role at Right Side Up, and how long have you been with us?

I have been the Finance Manager for Right Side Up for about a year and a half now.

My tasks include managing all invoicing, payables, and treasury accounts; reviewing and reconciling financials; and conducting monthly reporting and analysis. I also support the entire organization by implementing and optimizing processes and being a knowledge source for any questions the team may have.

Tell me about your professional background and area(s) of expertise. Any achievements you’re proud of or notable brands you’ve worked with?

I have my certified public accountant (CPA) licenses, and I’ve worked in both accounting and finance roles for over 12 years. I’ve found the most enjoyment working for smaller organizations where I can make more of an impact and the job responsibilities can be more varied. There’s never a dull moment, and I enjoy that in my day-to-day responsibilities.

What has the structure and flexibility of Right Side Up’s model allowed you to do outside of work?

I love working for a company that values employees' lives outside of work! Right Side Up’s fully remote structure has allowed me to extend trips to new places, where I can work during the day and explore after logging off and the computer has been powered down.

It’s given me the ability to turn an unrealistic two-day weekend into a four-day trip to many fun places. Not to mention, I no longer have dreaded commutes on both ends of my workdays—so I get back over an hour of my personal time.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

Like every other kid growing up in the 1990s, I wanted to be a marine biologist! I don’t know if it was the movie Free Willy or all the time I spent in the non-fiction section of the school library.

What do you like to do for fun in your geographic area?

Most weekends, I spend rock climbing around the Southeast. I’m constantly monitoring Weather Underground to see which state is forecasted to have the lowest chance of rain. The weather can be a real nuisance for us living here along the East Coast.

What TV show, podcast, book, video game, recipe, or other interest are you loving right now?

I’m currently reading the first book of the Dune series after seeing the movies recently. It’s been really helpful having faces and names from the movies to reference as I’m reading.

Do you have a favorite quote?

“Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don’t plan it. Don’t wait for it. Just let it happen.” It’s a quote from Twin Peaks.
